This week’s theme is “Connecting.” Today we retrace our connections to the beauty and brilliance of our ancestors on the African continent. We’ll take a closer look at the bustling empire of Mali from 1200 to 1500 AD. Scholar P. James Oliver noted: “Thousands of students and scholars were also drawn to Timbuktu by the city’s famed university. Their books and manuscripts, tens of thousands of them, still exist.” Too few of us learn about this rich legacy, and regressive social studies curricula in states like Florida are making it even harder for students to access our true history.
